The Jubilee

A huge job this year was the organising of  a series of events where we live. Our flat is part of an estate that celebrated it's 50th anniversary since completion of building. As it was the Royal Jubilee it seemed a good idea to hit two birds with one stone. The estate was a council estate but is now roughly half and half tenant and leaseholder, although some leaseholders sublet.
The real motivation behind organising this Jubilee event was to bring residents together around something positive. We had to have several activities to suit as many people as possible and they had to be were spread out due to the design of the estate.
The estate is famous amongst architects who love its modernism however to live here you realise some of the things that do not work so well for the people here.

Retired

I was beginning to think I would never get started on this, a typical thinking of too many things at once and not settling to one thing or the other. It has been worse since I stopped full-time work.
So to move forward I have:

  • Joined the local health LINk as a volunteer, co-opted member of the Steering group,
  • Completed my training as a Volunteer Reading helper
  • Joined the National Pensioners Convention
  • Joined the Hackney National Pensioners Convention
  • I am considering joining the Steering Group of the City and Hackney Older persons reference group
  • Have set up a company with a friend
  • I am associated with a new cooperative that I hope to join fully in January '13
  • Have joined the Cooperative Party
